Family, friends gather at funeral of boy, 7, killed in pit bull attack - Boston Herald
Jul 27, 2019Michael Church yesterday to tearfully say goodbye to a little boy whose life was tragically cut short.The heartbroken mourners, many wearing memorial T-shirts with a picture of Javien Candelario’s face, wept as his white coffin was carried into the church by five pallbearers, one of whom was a young boy.When the hourlong service ended, a distraught woman could be seen sobbing and embracing the back of the hearse that would carry Javien to his final resting place as grief-stricken pallbearers sat on a step, crying with their arms around each other.Some of Javien’s family members were handed white roses between embraces.Neighbors have described Javien as a happy child who would often be seen riding his bike up and down his street.Javien was killed on Clare Street Oct. 21 when he was viciously attacked by two pit bulls. Initial reports suggest the boy approached or entered the dogs’ enclosure. Neighbors said they couldn’t do anything to stop the attack, and authorities say Javien was dead when police arrived.One of the dogs was shot and killed by police. The other was taken into custody by animal control.Javien’s funeral arrangements were donated to the family, and Lowell City Manager Kevin J. Murphy said the little boy will be given a burial plot.“It’s just such a tragic accident. It’s something we can do,” said Garry Matthews of the Fay McCabe Funeral Home in Lowell, who handled the arrangements.“It’s just something that we feel should be done,” he said.The incident prompted the Lowell City Council to vote unanimously to direct the city to look into adding restrictions for pit bulls. A spokeswoman for Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office said the investigation into the incident is active and ongoing.
